East Sudan: a forgotten crisis | WFP | United Nations World Food Programme. Ask most people where the crises are in Sudan, and they will say Darfur and the south. But the east of the country is also living its own silent crisis, which has been largely ignored by the world. WFP spokesperson Mohamed Amasha meets some of the refugees in the camps of east Sudan. Mariam Ramadan, 2. Living in the Wadsharifeya refugee camp in Eastern Sudan, Mariam is part of what is officially described as a protracted refugee situation – a situation that the United Nations this year described as one of the 1. In 1. 98. 2, when she was just two, Mariam left Aqurdat town in pre- independence Eritrea in the arms of her mother and, along with her four elder sisters, they headed for Sudan. Her father joined them there in 1. My father used to work for an Ethiopian company as many did in Eritrea,” Mariam explains.“When relations worsened between the two countries, my father was put in jail for nearly six months,” she says. Competing for funding. Mariam and her family are now living in a camp with tens of thousands of other refugees from Ethiopia and Eritrea in East Sudan. WFP has been assisting some of these refugees since 1. The agency’s support depends on donor funding, but the refugees’ plight competes for attention with a multitude of other crises around the world requiring donations. Over the past several years, various dips in funding have meant rations have been delivered late or in reduced quantities – leaving families to cut down on meals to stretch out their food stocks. Surviving in the camps. Although a few of the camps are land- based, with refugee families allocated a small plot to cultivate, there is not enough land for everyone, and a cycle of poor seasons and droughts have meant low harvests. For new arrivals in particular, making their way in the camps can be a difficult and bewildering business. East Africa. Burundi; Central African. East Of Sudan FilmMany are young people, wanting to avoid military service. Using her experience from a lifetime living in the camps, Mariam Ramadan works with the Sudanese Red Crescent to ease the path for those who continue to arrive in a slow but steady trickle. Her work includes organising workshops on violence against women, hygiene and HIV/AIDS. One such new arrival is 2. Rukia Woldu*, who left Eritrea to escape military service. She spent three days jolting towards Sudan in a donkey cart, then crossed the desolate border terrain on foot. Found not far from the boundary by a Sudanese border patrol, Rukia was guided towards the nearest of the 1. Sudan. Mariam Ramadan “I felt lost in Eritrea,” Rukia says. My family wanted to leave as well but they were afraid my father could be put in prison if they were caught on the border.”Although lonely and worried about finalising her papers, she was hopeful about the future.“I heard that international organisations such as WFP are helping refugees with activities, and in return they receive monthly food rations. I want to learn skills to earn my living and make a better life for myself. I want to be self- reliant,” she says. With only a basic education and few marketable skills, at first, she went to work selling coffee, but with five children, the family’s needs far outstripped her earnings. Life began to change when she joined a training programme supported by WFP.“The sewing and cooking courses helped me earn more, and life doesn’t seem hopeless any longer,” she said. Now, Freweiny also uses her skills to teach others: “I earn my living by working as a teacher in the Sudanese Red Crescent (SRC) to train and encourage other women.”Providing that the funding continues, the newly arrived Rukia may meet Terdesa in the classes. WFP emergency coordinator for the east and central region, Sarah Longford, says the training programmes and other schemes that boost self- reliance and offer opportunities to access an income are a priority.“Together with our cooperating partners, including the Sudanese Red Crescent, we’re working on linking more of our food assistance to training programmes, and other similar measures, so that we also build self- sufficiency. Otherwise the outlook is extremely bleak for these people.”“At the same time, we are also working to assist Sudanese people in the eastern regions who are displaced or for other reasons can’t meet their families’ food needs.”Hard hit Longford says the east has been hit hard by repeated droughts and a long- term decline in rainfall, while sporadic conflict has also uprooted families and communities. The region is experiencing a chronic livelihoods crisis and malnutrition rates have soared. Longford says WFP is trying to encourage other agencies to focus on eastern Sudan to aid development.“Like other refugees in protracted circumstances, the Eritrean and Ethiopian refugees are often forgotten – and they are living in a region of Sudan that is itself often overlooked. Attention tends to focus on people in Darfur and the south, but people in the east are also in dire need," she says.*Not her real name. Urban Dictionary: loophole. Dizziness has many possible causes, including inner ear disturbance, motion sickness and medication effects. Morning sickness often begins 4 to 6 weeks after conception. It may continue until the 4th month of pregnancy. Some women have morning sickness during their entire.Sometimes it's caused by an underlying health condition, such as poor circulation, infection or injury. The way dizziness makes you feel and your triggers provide clues for possible causes. How long the dizziness lasts and any other symptoms you have also help pinpoint the cause. Inner ear problems that cause dizziness (vertigo)Your sense of balance depends on the combined input from the various parts of your sensory system. These include your: Eyes, which help you determine where your body is in space and how it's moving. Sensory nerves, which send messages to your brain about body movements and positions. Inner ear, which houses sensors that help detect gravity and back- and- forth motion. Vertigo is the false sense that your surroundings are spinning or moving. With inner ear disorders, your brain receives signals from the inner ear that aren't consistent with what your eyes and sensory nerves are receiving. Vertigo is what results as your brain works to sort out the confusion. Define morning: the early part of the day : the time of day from sunrise until noon — morning in a sentence. Your Sense of Smell – Does Your Morning Coffee Smell. Does Your Morning Coffee Smell Better Than it. • The sense of smell is least acute in the morning. Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). This condition causes an intense and brief but false sense that you're spinning or moving. These episodes are triggered by a rapid change in head movement, such as when you turn over in bed, sit up or experience a blow to the head. BPPV is the most common cause of vertigo. Infection. A viral infection of the vestibular nerve, called vestibular neuritis, can cause intense, constant vertigo. If you also have sudden hearing loss, you may have labyrinthitis. Meniere's disease. This disease involves the excessive buildup of fluid in your inner ear. It's characterized by sudden episodes of vertigo lasting as long as several hours. Sense definition, any of the faculties, as sight, hearing, smell. Thus the morning star and the evening star have the same reference, Venus, but different senses;. Morning sickness is a very common pregnancy symptom. Here’s some help for every woman coping with nausea during pregnancy, especially during the early months. You may also experience fluctuating hearing loss, ringing in the ear and the feeling of a plugged ear. Migraine. People who experience migraines may have episodes of vertigo or other types of dizziness even when they're not having a severe headache. Such vertigo episodes can last minutes to hours and may be associated with headache as well as light and noise sensitivity. Circulation problems that cause dizziness. You may feel dizzy, faint or off balance if your heart isn't pumping enough blood to your brain. Causes include: Drop in blood pressure. A dramatic drop in your systolic blood pressure — the higher number in your blood pressure reading — may result in brief lightheadedness or a feeling of faintness. It can occur after sitting up or standing too quickly. This condition is also called orthostatic hypotension. Poor blood circulation. Conditions such as cardiomyopathy, heart attack, heart arrhythmia and transient ischemic attack could cause dizziness. And a decrease in blood volume may cause inadequate blood flow to your brain or inner ear. Other causes of dizziness. Neurological conditions. Some neurological disorders — such as Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis — can lead to progressive loss of balance. Medications. Dizziness can be a side effect of certain medications — such as anti- seizure drugs, antidepressants, sedatives and tranquilizers. In particular, blood pressure lowering medications may cause faintness if they lower your blood pressure too much. Anxiety disorders. Certain anxiety disorders may cause lightheadedness or a woozy feeling often referred to as dizziness. These include panic attacks and a fear of leaving home or being in large, open spaces (agoraphobia). Low iron levels (anemia). Other signs and symptoms that may occur along with dizziness if you have anemia include fatigue, weakness and pale skin. Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). This condition generally occurs in people with diabetes who use insulin. Dizziness (lightheadedness) may be accompanied by sweating and anxiety. Overheating and dehydration. If you're active in hot weather, or if you don't drink enough fluids, you may feel dizzy from overheating (hyperthermia) or from dehydration. This is especially true if you take certain heart medications. Aug. 1. 1, 2. 01. Marx JA, et al., eds. Dizziness and vertigo. In: Rosen's Emergency Medicine: Concepts and Clinical Practice. If you spend any time mucking around in the philosophy of language, you’re going to run headlong into Gottlob Frege at some point. Frege, round about the turn of the 2. What is Meaning? The basic question that any philosophy of language must address is this: What can we say about the meaning of a word (and — what perhaps amounts to the same thing — the meaning of a sentence)? A first stab at analyzing this is to say that the meaning of a word is just what it points to — what it designates or refers to. For instance, the word (or name, in this case) “Herbie” refers to my cat, Herbie. Make sure to get your head around the difference between a word and an object referred to by that word. We’ll have a post about this “use/mention” distinction soon. For now, just stay alert to the use of quotation marks to distinguish a word from its associated object.) The word “Herbie” points to the creature that is at the time of this writing tapping my leg with his paw, trying to get me to play with him. I’ll be right back…)We can apply the same analysis to numbers. The ink- on- paper numeral “7” that you might write down in your checkbook or on a math test, refers to the actual number 7, which for the sake of argument we’ll take to be some object out there in the universe somewhere. Similarly, and perhaps easier to comprehend, the words “seven”, “siete”, “sept”, and “sieben” all refer to the number 7 as well (in English, Spanish, French, and German, respectively). If this is the right picture, it would give us a convenient way to explain how “seven” and “siete” both mean the same thing: It’s because both words refer to the same thing. Reference Ain’t Enough. If this were all there is to meaning, then “1. But as Kant famously pointed out (in his analytic/synthetic, a priori/a posteriori distinctions), these two words/phrases might well mean different things. To see why, let’s look at the following statement: “1. Compare that with this statement: “7 + 5 = 1. The first statement doesn’t say much except that a thing is always identical with itself. The second says something significantly new about 1. If this is true, then “1. You can see this difference more clearly if you look at these in a different context. I know that 1. 2 = 1. One can know this without knowing anything about addition.“I know that 7 + 5 = 1. To know this, one has to know something about addition. This becomes even clearer with a more complex mathematical fact.“I know that 8. I know that 2. 4,7. Anyone can utter the first sentence without any more knowledge than ‘everything is equal to itself’. But to say the second sentence with any sort of certainty, you’d have to have done some complex calculations (or had a calculator do them for you). There’s something about the second statement that is differently meaningful than the first. The Morning Star and The Evening Star. The more usual example philosophers of language use is (happily for most of you) not mathematical. The ancient Greeks, looking at the dark sky above them, noticed two very bright stars. One came up shortly after the sun went down in the evening, and was brighter than any other star around it; the other star came up shortly before the sun came up in the morning and was similarly bright. They named these two stars: “The Morning Star” and “The Evening Star”. Well, maybe you saw this coming, but it turns out that these two stars were actually the same object: Venus. Of course, not even a star after all, but a brightly reflective planet.) So here’s the referential picture the ancient Greeks had: A few centuries later, astronomers gave us this picture instead: Now, if reference is all there is to meaning, then these two sentences would have the same meaning: “The Morning Star is the Morning Star.”“The Morning Star is the Evening Star.”Because by just considering reference those two sentences translate to this one sentence: “Venus is Venus.”But clearly these sentences have very different meanings — the first sentence is obvious to anyone, even those without any knowledge of astronomy; the second sentence is something that one would only know by virtue of synthesizing some significant piece of astronomical knowledge, namely that “The Morning Star” and “The Evening Star” both refer to the same heavenly body: Venus. Frege’s Solution. So hopefully you’ll agree that reference can’t be all there is to meaning. Frege’s idea was that while reference is important to meaning, there is another important dimension to meaning as well, which he called sense. He called the sense of a term the “mode of presentation” of the referent. So while “the Morning Star” and “the Evening Star” both refer to the same thing, they have different senses: the sense of “the Morning Star” is something like “the bright star that rises in the early morning”, while the sense of “the Evening Star” is something like “the bright star that rises in the early evening”. Same reference; different sense. On this scheme, when we say “the Morning Star is the Evening Star”, we’re comparing senses, not references, and this is why it’s a statement of new knowledge (synthetic, a la Kant) and not just an obvious truth (analytic, a la Kant). The Morning Star is the Morning Star” is comparing two things that not only have the same references, but the same senses. And this is semantically not interesting. Sense Without Reference. One interesting consequence of Frege’s philosophy of language is that it turns out that not everything with a sense has a reference.“The novel written by Richard Nixon” has a sense — it presents an idea to us in a clearly understandable way — but has no reference — Nixon never (as far as I know) actually wrote a novel. So in fact the meaning of a sentence might not have to rely at all on reference. The novel written by Richard Nixon is long and boring” has a meaning even though the subject of the sentence doesn’t exist. We’ll take up this interesting idea in a future post.
